As a pre-medicine major with minors in Chemistry and French, my hope for the near future is to become a plastic surgeon. Ever since I was younger, I have been fascinated with cosmetics science. I wanted to do something with my life that allowed my creativity to flourish side by side with my growing knowledge of biology and chemistry. The beauty industry itself, whether strictly medical or trendy, is constantly improving and modifying its scientific and medical techniques. As a high schooler, I began creating homemade, chemical-free hair, skin, nail, and facial products. I did this by using my Assyrian family's natural remedies. Oils, herbs, everything used in the village back home in Tur-Abdin. This hobby turned into a side business, and I fell in love with seeing my client's results. I loved it even more because I was able to implement my roots and educate my peers on the history of middle eastern beauty and remedies. My clients fell back in love with themselves after going through hard times that caused hair loss, acne, and even skin rashes that were cured using my homemade products. I want to give back to the community and thank the medical field and my Assyrian community here in America, for allowing me to fall in love with science, cosmetics, and my heritage. Becoming a plastic surgeon would mean that I will be able to help those looking to achieve their beauty needs and bring their confidence back safely. And I would still be able to represent my Assyrian people and make my ancestors proud of me, for not forgetting who I am.
The Ramina Tara Badal Memorial Scholarship has helped ease the burden of paying for an MCAT course this summer. It helped immensely with exam prep and I have just started the medical school application process. I hope to have more to share on my journey in the future.

An important part of my educational journey started during my first semester of 8th grade when I decided to take a college class. I started off with a sociology course and I genuinely enjoyed the college environment. I decided to continue taking college courses while enrolled in junior high and I continued my journey during my high school years. While attending community college I came to realize that having more than one career is always beneficial and never impossible which is why I started taking the prerequisites in order to be accepted into the Nursing Program at Merced College while still attending UC Merced. I recently started working as a full-time CNA at the Mercy Medical Center in order to save money to pay for my nursing education after I finish my Bachelor's Degree in Spring 2024. I am currently working on both my requirements for the Nursing Program and my Bachelor’s degree.
The Ramina Tara Badal Scholarship has helped me immensely as I am approaching my graduating date this May of 2024. I have been able to purchase a computer which has helped me navigate my assignments and study in a more easier way. I have been very grateful to have received this scholarship because it has helped me financially support myself while working and attending school full time. I was very worried about financial responsibilities but the RTB scholarship helped remove some burdens off me and helped me focus more on my education and career. I am currently taking my last prerequisite for my nursing degree and will be applying for nursing programs in 2025. I will always be thankful for the opportunity this scholarship allowed me to graduate two years earlier and I hope to one day give back to my community.

Much of my study decisions have been shaped by societal experiences I have faced in my lifetime. At a young age, I was extremely self- conscious and had low confidence levels because of my severe acne. During this time, I did not consider my acne to only be a skin condition but an emotional condition as well. As a result, I made it a priority to get rid of my acne, so I turned to conducting my remote research. Learning about this particular skin condition instilled a sense of curiosity in me that would soon build a fond fascination with scientific research.
As a teenager, I scavaged through multiple Google websites and YouTube videos to find answers to my questions about acne. This research allowed me to learn about the skin as a body organ and taught me more about how other physiological processes in the human body function. Most importantly, how problems in those organs may cause severe effects on the body's functionality as a whole and how we can develop resolutions to those problems.
Having a problem, such as acne, that caused emotional pain and trying to find solutions to it by doing research allowed me to gain a new perspective on the importance of human body functions and scientific research. Therefore, the personal interests that I have developed in scientific research have influenced me to study biomedical science to help solve more significant health issues, such as skin cancers and cardiovascular diseases.
